The Beginning
Eugene grew up in a loving home, where he recalls sharing a love of basketball with his father and older sister, as well as his mother’s support for his sportsmanship ambitions. Despite their family devotion, the Campbells were not safe from the harsh and deadly reality of life outside their house and in the surrounding region. Accordingly, they found themselves constantly on the move, looking for the greatest surroundings and prospects for a secure and pleasant life.
Eugene Campbell III, the youngest of the group, recounts how this volatility affected his childhood. One of the first issues Campbell had, when he learned about the complexities of the world around him, was difficulty mingling with people, strained friendships, and a lack of a sense of belonging. Campbell would attend six different schools during his education. Campbell was challenged not only by the regularity with which his family relocated but also by the circumstances in the areas to which they would go. He recalls being the minority in his courses and on sports teams, which presented its own set of and influenced the timing of the next Campbell family relocation.
Eugene remained dedicated to his studies throughout, knowing that his ultimate goal of becoming an athlete was dependent on it. He participated in sports during middle and high school, but just before his freshman year, he faced a major hurdle that nearly ended his athletic career.
Eugene was not yet playing basketball at the time, but he was renowned as one of his school’s greatest baseball players. Despite working hard at school to maintain his grades, Eugene Campbell was dropped from the baseball team when a teacher fraudulently misled the school about his grade ranking. Campbell recalls feeling dejected at the time. Campbell, in an unexpected and noble move, showed no ill will toward the instructor who risked everything he had worked for; Instead, he praised them and redirected his energies to something he had always enjoyed.
Eugene entered New Jersey City University and, as he had always done, was dedicated to his education as well as his athletics. Campbell received three college degrees, including a Master’s in Psychology, and dominated basketball at NJCU, creating and breaking records. Campbell taught the sport for a few years after graduating before deciding to pursue a professional career.
