Hi Melotika, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey hey! Been great and super busy thank you!
Can you tell us about your latest single “Digital Dreams”?
It’s so exciting that this song is finally here! The song was written back in 2020 and was supposed to be a B-side off my latest Retro Dance Pop EP Dancing Without You. After some thought, I felt like this song had its own eccentric vibe and was its own thing so I waited a bit longer to release it. Its the perfect introduction to a new Melotika era.
What inspired you to write the song?
The song is about our obsessions with social media, making light out of a dark situation since the global pandemic and partaking in the new virtual world. We are obsessed with being social through our phones. The need to be loved and connected is greater than ever. We all want validation, and now you can literally be anyone you want to be online. While being stranded in the middle of a global pandemic and being glued to social media, it felt natural to write a song about our current times, something we all can relate to.
What was the writing and recording process like for the track?
With the producer of the track, Twocann, we worked remotely. It was a very spontaneous song. Unlike other tracks I’ve written, this one lyrically was done within a day and recorded a few months later in Toronto at Phase One Studios. I was just really feeling it and the melody was just so much fun and really catchy. I imagined myself trapped in the metaverse and what it would be like if I was a virtual Pop Star singing to my fans. (Ha!) We re-visited the production a year later and made some instrumental changes. I literally got the chills after hearing the Mix done by Canadian producer Taabu, and realised that this is the kind of energy the world needs!!
Can you tell us about the music video for “Digital Dreams”? Any behind-the-scenes stories you can share with us?
The making of the music video was also spontaneous. With my animation artist Toastermind, we wanted to combine both Melotika’s real world and fictional world. The Olympic stadium here in Montreal has so much history and was very futuristic the time the building was made. I couldn’t think of any other spot that looked like it was about to take off into outer space and tell my story. There is just something so compelling about combining the old with the new. I’ve been on a low budget with my music projects since we were hit with Covid-19 so my boyfriend and I shot the music video ourselves and I worked on the post-production. It was a challenge to film myself but we made it work!
What role does Canada play in your music?
Canada plays a huge role in my life and music. Especially Toronto… Afterreal audio engineering and music at Recording Art Canada in Montreal, I wanted a change and a new start. I moved to Toronto in 2015 and created my Melotika persona in 2016. I have written and recorded music ever since. The musicians and producers I’ve met in Toronto, all the local shows I’ve performed since 2017 changed my life and allowed me to experiment with my sound and become the artists I am today.
Does the new single mean we can expect more new material soon?
Definitely! You can look forward to another single from me expected to be released sometime in June, and I am in the middle of composing a collection of new music. It never stops!
What else is happening next in Melotika’s world?
Other than promoting ‘Digital Dreams’ and planning for the next release and song-writing, I am slowly building my home studio so I can start recording my new music from home. Now that Covid restrictions seem to be lifting here in Canada, I have a show that has been postponed in Toronto for this summer at Monarch Tavern and I will be planning to perform abroad in some USA cities. More info TBA!
