Today, prized pop songwriter and multi-talented performer Mallrat unveils details of her much-anticipated debut album Butterfly Blueset for release on May 13 via Netwerk (available to pre-order HERE). Mallrat also shares “Teeth,” the third single lifted from the forthcoming full-length.
Mallrat shares: “I’ve always valued music that is interesting, beautiful, and unpretentious. Something timeless and not reactive. ‘Butterfly Blue was made with that in mind. It’s a demonstration of not pretending to be anyone else.”
On Butterfly Blue, Mallrat embodies the spirit of its titular creature — but without the delicacy that keeps you at a close distance. Across a dozen clever and open-hearted tracks, Mallrat, aka Grace Shawdraws you in close and shows you the world through her wide, hopeful eyes.
Taking influence from pop, rock, and folk, Butterfly Blue solidifies Mallrat’s reputation as a master of clever, timeless pop. Sweeping across vast, airy production is often surprising samples and sounds: chopped-up Gangsta Pat bars, a flipped recording of a children’s choir performing Phoenix’s “Lisztomania,” and distorted effects recorded from discarded children’s toys. Layered, like an instrument all their own, are her signature breathy vocals, more assured and confident than ever before.
Album pre-order packages including vinyl, custom handcrafted limited edition Butterfly Blue jewelry, and a Butterfly Blue capsule of hoodies, tees and caps are available at lilmallrat.com
And
Arriving hot on the heels of her latest acclaimed single, “Your Love” (co-produced by Mallrat herself and Stylaz Fuego), “Teeth” is featured on the album alongside last year’s indie-rock cut “Rockstar.” Stay tuned for the full track list (featuring some truly iconic collaborators).
About the song, Mallrat says, “I like to think that if “Teeth” was out in 2004, it would be on the OC soundtrack. In the song, I describe a big, omnipresent ‘it.’ When I wrote these lyrics, I was playing with the idea that we talk about sex, prayer, violence, and power with very similar language. I wanted to see if I could all of these things into one blurry ball of energy.”
Beginning as a bedroom project in her native Brisbane, Mallrat has evolved from cult favorite to beloved star with her trio of early EPs – Uninvited (2016), In The Sky (2018), Driving Music (2019). Channeling fears, hopes, and obsessions into lyrics, her songs have become anthems for young people. With combined streams topping 300 million, she has become a beacon the music industry eagerly follows. Her trio of early EPs – Uninvited (2016), In The Sky (2018), Driving Music (2019) –garnered attention from the NY Times, NYLON, NPR, and more. PAPER named her in their “100 Women Revolutionizing Pop,” after making it onto the “Best of” lists by The Fader, Billboard, NOISEY, NME, Triple J, and Teen Vogue. At home in Australia, she continues to place Top 5 on Triple J charts. In the States, she made her late-night TV debut on the Late Late Show With James Corden; in the UK she won “Best Australian Solo Act” at the NME Awards. She has toured internationally, opening for Maggie Rogers, Post Malone, and King Princess, selling out headline shows from London to New York, and collecting fans in the likes of Mark Ronson along the way.
Get ready for the next phase of a rising pop princess as she prepares to unfurl her wings and show you how she’s grown.
