Our research report how prices and quality stand when comparing local chains and stores. To compare price, our researchers shopped at 154 various locations using a market basket of common items to measure prices, while evaluating the service quality of each location.
The Amazon buyout has had little effect on food prices in Whole Foods.
Many consumers are excited to buy Whole Foods products now that Amazon owns them, but we’re not there yet.
While the produce and meat quality are among the best in the area, Whole Foods charges high prices.
Whole Foods is still the most expensive grocery store that we shopped at, but there has been some movement: Whole Foods is 18% higher than the average or 24% higher than Wegmans.
Our data shows that Whole Foods is now cheaper than its competitors. Whole Foods still has higher produce prices, but it offers lower prices than Safeway and Shoppers – these stores offer even lower quality produce.
The prices for meat at Whole foods are 50% higher than the average price per pound from the other stores.
The quality of Whole Foods’ products has not been affected by its buyout.
The acquisition of Whole Foods was designed to enhance Amazon’s ability to distribute groceries. Later, they increased their grocery delivery service and got into the market.
Whole Foods is a great place for groceries, but all the Amazon discounts don’t seem to make much of a difference
Whole Foods’ method of drawing customers in with promotions often includes products at a discount. Amazon Prime members are offered discounts on their purchases that aren’t available to other customers.
While saving time and money is good, Whole Foods offers very few deals and specials. Compared to other grocery stores, the company has very few sales and offers only a small number of Prime-only specials. Prime members have access to deals on roses and Valentine’s Day chocolates for $24.99!
Wegmans customers are impressed with the store’s high-quality products and service.
Poor Wegmans! It’s at the bottom of its field in everything but prices.
The four stores that offered the best price were PriceRite, Walmart, SuperTarget, and Target. Those people who shopped at these stores saved up to $1,500 in one year.
Compared to the average prices in stores Checkbook Surveyed, prices were much lower at PriceRite (-19%), Walmart (-15%), SuperTarget (-10%), and Target (-9%). In a family that spends $200 per week at the supermarket, a 10% price difference totals $1,000 per year; Similarly, a 15% price difference totals $1,500 per year.
We found that at Wegmans, the prices of goods are lower by five percent and at Food Lion, the prices are lower by four percent.
Price Rite may have a hefty grocery store fee
PriceRite may offer less variety than other grocery stores, with only 54 percent of what we found in the basket.
Safeway charges much more than other “traditional” supermarkets in the area.
Safeway is one of the costliest supermarkets in my area. Giant and Harris Teeter offer more affordable prices than Safeway, despite having comparable prices.
The prices at our DC Walmart were about six percent higher than at the suburban store.
Target prices vary very little from location to location, and the prices in it’s DC store were equivalent to its suburban “SuperTarget” store.
